Overview

Heage Windmill is unusual in providing an escorted mill tour. Our guides provide a brief history of the mill and milling in our interpretation centre, continuing outside where a miller will demonstrate how the sails are controlled. Visitors are then taken into the mill and the full milling process is explained. Tours take around 45minutes with a maximum or 14 visitors although most tours have fewer participants. Full training will be provided by our friendly team.

The windmill opens on Saturdays & Sundays (also Bank Holiday Mondays) from April to the end of October. Guides can choose when they wish to attend completing half or full days. Guides would be expected to arrive at 10am to help set up and prepare for visitors. Tours start at 11am, the last tour being no later than 3.30pm. Shutting down is then done and volunteers are usually away by 4.30pm. We also have the occasional mid-week daytime visits – typically half a day.

Our guides come from a wide range of backgrounds. Do not worry that you will have lots to learn – you will pick up what is required easily over time. If you get on well with people and enjoy conversing with them, you would be ideal.
