Overview
We are currently seeking volunteers who are willing to dedicate some of their time to help us achieve our goal of providing an excellent visitor experience.
General Responsibilities:
- Welcoming visitors during weekends
- Carry out room stewarding and guided tours
- Provide a great visitor experience
- Work with and alongside Trustees, Staff, and Volunteers.
- Assist with setting up and attending events on behalf of the PRCLT
The Role
We are seeking great communicators who can provide a warm welcome and share our love for historical locomotives with our visitors.
The Front of House positions we are seeking volunteers for are as follows:
- Room Stewards
- Welcomers
- Craft activity supervisors
- Café attendants
- Shop Assistants
The role will mostly be over weekends, with some scope for evening and weekday shifts, particularly during school holidays.
No previous experience or knowledge of railways is required. We have plenty of information for our volunteers to make use of in our on-site reference library. The organisation will seek to support any training which is relevant to the role and will provide opportunities to volunteer in other roles at the site if desired.
About The Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust
West Shed, the home of LMS locomotives Princess Margaret Rose and the Duchess of Sutherland, is an accredited museum, run by The Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust. It was built at Swanwick Junction near Ripley 1995 and remains on that site as a museum and workshop today.
The collection also contains other locomotives, notably two British Rail Standard Tanks, along with two smaller 21” locomotives. It also owns three highly important specialised carriages. Other collection items pertaining to the history of the LMS railway company and early days of British Railways.
Along with the museum and fully functioning workshop, West Shed also houses a reference library, a small café and shop.
