Our Purpose
Salcare helps create safer & stronger communities, where families, who are moving away from abuse and poverty, feel empowered to build a new future. We do this through the provision of practical & emotional support for the whole family.
Our Community Café reopened in October 2022 as part of our Community Hub, which also offers a community pantry, and charity shop & warehouse. The Community Café aims to serve local people who are living on the bread line to help subsidise their week shop and help with the cost of living. We try to offer good value, nutritious food to local families, individuals in need and older people, as well as facilitating access our other support services.
The Volunteer Role
Salcare’s Café aims to be at the heart of our local community as a warm, welcoming safe space for
everyone to come and have a hot meal, meet people and find out what is going on in the
local community. Aiming to be friendly space offering home-cooked food our Community Café caters for people who are lonely, living on the breadline, or who just want a simple home cooked meal at very good value.
The cafe is open, 10:00am – 2:30pm. We serve tasty home cooked food, made from our surplus food, with a simple menu of lunches, snacks, hot meals and drinks. Weekly theme
Afternoons will focus on an Older Folks Lunch Club and a Mum & Toddler Coffee & Snack Morning.

Role Responsibilities
• Participate in an induction and training
• Provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere for our customers
• Assist the volunteer café team and Community Hub Development Worker in day to day running of the cafe
• Serve customers promptly, courteously and with a smile
• Ensure the tables and surrounding area are clean and tidy
• Take orders, operate the till and handle the money
• Prepare drinks and food as required
• Undertake serving food and drinks
• Accept food donations from local people and partners (like local schools)
• Ensure kitchen and café area is clean and tidy at the end of the shift
• Foster a positive work environment of great teamwork, mutual respect, non-judgement and effective communication
Qualifications & Personal Attributes
• Age 15 and older
• Ability to commit to at least one shifts per week for a month
• Good organisational skills
• Willingness to complete Food Hygiene Level 2 and any necessary training
• Good communication skills
• Good spoken and written English a plus
• Positive attitude and a team player
• Flexible approach to working
• Tact and diplomacy in dealing with a variety of situations
• Self-awareness and able to use initiative
• Good understanding of equality and diversity
• Understanding of the issues facing the local community
• Compassionate and non-judgemental
• Completion of DBS as necessary

consultation with the volunteer and in line with service needs.
